After much anticipation and excitement, the new Yates County Speedway in Dundee, New York, formerly Black Rock Speedway, will hold its grand opening this Friday night, May 2nd. The CRSA Sprint Cars will headline the big night of racing, along with a full show of all divisions, on Abtex Corporation Night, beginning at 7:00 p.m.
It has been a busy time over the past five weeks for the Dundee oval since it was announced that Dan Harpell would be leasing the track for the season. Five months worth of work has been taking place in less than five weeks to get the track up and running and it is now time to drop the green flag on a new era at Yates County Speedway.
“We have been working around the clock trying to have everything in place on time to get opened up”, said Harpell. “The support by the community has been tremendous and there is a ton of excitement about all of the changes we have put in place. Now it’s time to give the fans and drivers a tremendous show and that’s what we intend to do”, he added.
A very well attended practice session was held this past Friday, in spite of showers all around the track that eventually set in. The track was in awesome shape as it was smooth and had tons of bite in it. The cars were setting a torrid pace around the tacky race track.
“We were able to hold a practice and in the process got the chance to see what the track would do”, said Harpell. “I was happy to have the track come up very smooth after the awful winter and spring we have had. We learned some things about it and will continue to learn more as we progress, but overall I was thrilled with the race track”, he added.
This Friday the exciting CRSA Sprint Cars will invade Yates County Speedway for their first of two appearances. Defending CRSA Champion John Matrafailo will lead a strong field of cars to Dundee in their season opening event. He will be strongly challenged by Rookie of the Year and runner up in the points, Jordan Thomas. The 16 year old Thomas, the son of former Sprint Car star Jeff ‘Spider’ Thomas, has turned a lot of heads in his brief Sprint Car career. Watch for him to go to the front in his potent #79.
Josh Pieniazek, Mark Taylor and former Modified competitor Scott Goodrich completed the top five in the final CRSA standings for 2013. Finishing just out of the top five was Emily VanInwegen in sixth. She followed the entire series last year and had many top finishes.
The Crate Sportsman, Late Models, Street Stocks, IMCA Modifieds, 602 Sportsman Spirits, Four Cylinders and Youth Bandits will all open their point seasons on Friday. The first point show for the 305 Sprints will be May 16th.
The Crate Sportsman will have a lot of extra incentive this year. In addition to racing for a Track Championship, they will also be in the hunt for the American Racer Cup State Title and Overall Title. While every race counts towards the Track Championship points, only their best 12 finishes go toward the American Racer Cup points.
In addition to the point fund money they will receive from the track, they are also racing for a shot at the $1,500 top prize for the Overall American Racer Cup Title and another $1,200 for winning the New York West State Title. The highest finisher in the tracks American Racer Cup standings will receive two free tires, with one tire going to second and $85 off the price of a tire going to third.
Yet another bonus to the American Racer Cup is the opportunity to compete in the American Racer Cup Dash at Five Mile Point Speedway on October 10th. The winner of the 15 lap dash will pocket $1,000 with every other participant receiving a free tire. Sportsman drivers should take notice of all of the great incentives that are in place for them this year at Yates County Speedway and be sure to take full advantage of them.
Street Stock drivers have paid close attention to the Greg’s Auto Body Street Stock bonus over the winter. The Street Stock feature winner will take home $500 for his efforts. Expect a strong field of Street Stocks each week at Yates County Speedway.
