Todd Henderson, Quinn Sutherland, Frank Guererri Jr., Russ Wassner and Dylan Cecce Big Winners on Big Night at Black Rock
By RICH VLECK
DUNDEE, NY - “Pack the Track” Night produced a capacity crowd and some of the best racing of the year. When it was all said and done, there were three new winners and two point leaders strengthening their lead.
To kick off the features, Todd Henderson all but locked up the Hoselton Automotive Sportsman Championship with an impressive victory over defending Champion Brady Fultz.
Henderson, of Canandaigua, scored his sixth win of the season by taking the lead on the seventh lap from Greg Hixson and putting distance on the rest of the field for the majority of the event.
After a lap 17 caution, Fultz had a chance to close on the back of the No. 18H, but could not find a line around him and into the lead. Fultz made a last-ditch effort in the final corner, but nearly spun out his No. 70 and had to settle for second.
“I saw Brady’s number on the (score) board on that last caution and knew he was going to be tough,” said Henderson in Victory Lane. “I think this gave us enough points to wrap up the title.”
Henderson now holds a 27-point lead over Fultz, meaning that all he has to do is start the feature in the final race in two weeks to pick up the 2008 crown.
Dan Sellen, who was shaking it up for the lead early on, would hold off a hard-charging Greg Crooker for third, with Fran Hilton completing the top-five.
To round out the night, local favorite Quinn Sutherland captured his first win of the season in the Freedom Village USA Late Models, smoothly bringing his D.B. Miles Insurance No. 36 to the front by lap nine and hold a steady distance over the rest of the pack.
Sutherland has been a staple of this division for years, but in 2008 had struggled to find his way to the front. On a big night at the track, he was able to capitalize on the opportunity.
Rich Karlnoski, also from Dundee, was out in front early but was slow to go on a lap 7 restart, which lost the lead for him. He would be able to hold on to second though in the No. 55x.
Defending Champion Jeremy Wonderling was able to rebound from problems in his hot lap and heat events to score third. Point leader Dave DuBois and modified regular Dale Welty would round out the top-five.
Frank Guererri captured the lead in the Labatt Blue Street Stock Feature on lap 13 when Rich Talada broke. Guererri was pressuring him before that point and after that point would cruise to his win.
In his fourth start of the year, the No. 113 finally cracked into the win driving for his new car owner. The Ovid, NY driver became the fifth different winner this year in the street stocks.
Rich Sharpsteen had a rough start to the 20-lap event, but would be able to salvage a second place finish, helping him to gain ground on Chris Fisher for the championship chase, with Fisher having a reoccurring right rear tire problem.
Jared Hill scored a solid third place run with Chuck Pruden and George Parker also posting impressive performances to complete the top-five.
Russ Wassner took a back-up engine from Ray Speicher to stay in competition with the Signs Plus of Kanona 4-Cylinders and made it count with his first win in over a year in his No. 82.
Wassner picked up the win in his heat and lead all 20 laps, keeping distance on Jack Ayers, Joe Povoski and engine owner Ray Speicher through two cautions to visit Victory Lane.
Povoski was smooth and steady moving his way through the pack to score a solid second place finish, just ahead of Jack Ayers, Jon Wallenbeck and Ray Speicher.
The Home Necessities Bandits got the night started off right as point leader Dylan Cecce took the lead on lap five when David Ahouse broke in his No. 10. Cecce would hold off Cody Moorehouse in a tight battle for his ninth win of the year. Cody Chisom, Zach Teed and Kailey Wassner would all record quality finishes to complete the top-five.
Next week will be the Wreckapalooza II with the modifieds, 4-cylinders and bandits taking care of the standard racing card end of things, while boats, buses and motorhomes get destroyed.
